Wedding Centrepiece Ideas: Tall, Low and Everything Between

A tall gold candle-tower centrepiece with glass-shaded candles rising from a bed of peach, blush and ivory roses

When guests walk into a reception, the first thing they take in is the room as a whole: the lighting, the stage and the rhythm of the tables. Centrepieces are what give that rhythm its character. Repeated across every table, they carry your colour palette through the space and decide whether the room feels romantic, grand, modern or relaxed.

Tall or low?

Tall centrepieces lift the eye and fill the volume of rooms with high ceilings, which is why they suit ballrooms and grand hotel suites. Low arrangements keep sightlines open across the table and feel more intimate. Many of the most striking rooms use both, alternating heights from table to table so the room has movement without feeling crowded.

Styles to consider

  • Floral domes on gold or glass stands, the classic statement for a ballroom reception.
  • Hoop and ring designs with suspended tealight globes, for a softer, contemporary feel.
  • Candle towers and candelabra rising from a bed of roses, which bring warmth and height together.
  • Low garlands and bud vases along long tables, for a relaxed, dinner-party atmosphere.

Keep conversation flowing

Whatever the style, guests should be able to see and talk to each other across the table. Tall designs work best when the stem or stand is slim and the arrangement sits well above eye level. Low designs should stay below it. Anything in between tends to get in the way.

Design the table, not just the centrepiece

Linen, napkins, glassware, candles and chair styling all sit alongside the centrepiece. Choosing them together is what makes a table look finished rather than assembled. It is also worth thinking about the top table and the stage at the same time, so the whole room reads as one design.
