Designing a Reception Stage That Anchors the Room

A reception stage with gilded ivory sofas beneath a canopy of red and blush roses, blush drapes and a gold lattice backdrop, above a starlit dance floor

At most South Asian receptions, the stage is where the couple are seated, where families come up to greet them and where a large share of the evening's photographs are taken. It is the visual anchor of the room, so it deserves as much thought as the ceremony itself.

Size it to the room

A stage should feel generous without overwhelming the space. Consider the width of the room, the ceiling height and the distance from the furthest tables. In a large ballroom, a wider stage with height in the backdrop holds attention; in a smaller room, a tighter, more detailed design often looks more refined.

The backdrop sets the style

  • Draped fabric with chandeliers for a classic, elegant feel.
  • Gold frames or arches dressed with florals for a contemporary look.
  • Flower walls for a lush, romantic backdrop.
  • Printed backdrops for a bold pattern or a design made just for you.

Seating and the floor

The couple's seating is the centrepiece of the stage, whether a tufted gilded sofa or a pair of modern armchairs. Floral arrangements at the front edge, steps that are easy to use in a lehenga, and a dance floor in front of the stage all help it feel complete.

Light it properly

Even the most beautiful stage will look flat without the right lighting. Uplighting on the backdrop, soft front light on the couple and a little sparkle from chandeliers or candles make all the difference, both in the room and in photographs.
